Matilda Plains 2007 Shiraz Cabernet MerlotLanghorne Creek, South Australia
Background Matilda Plains is an exciting new range from the Bremerton stable. Matilda Plains Winery is a small family owned winery located in Langhorne Creek South Australia where Cabernet and Shiraz have been traditionally grown for over 100 years. These two very Australian red grape varieties Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz were the perfect choice for the base of this 2007 Matilda Plains red blend.
Winemaking Notes This delicious red wine has been carefully blended to provide a generous and well balanced palate displaying mouth filling fruit, complementing soft well-integrated tannins and a lingering finish. The small addition of Merlot to the blend provides a soft and supple mouthfeel. The vintage 2007 Matilda Plains Cabernet Shiraz was fermented in Traditional open top fermenters allowing maximum extraction of color and flavor. The wine had American oak maturation for 10 months prior to blending and bottling. The blend is 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Shiraz and 12% Merlot.
Tasting Notes The color is deep crimson with good clarity. The nose is rich and intense with ripe mulberries and blackberries, chocolate and earthy complexities. The wine displays rich mouth-filling dark berry and cherry fruit characters with hints of chocolate, licorice and spice. Elegant tannins and a long lingering finish ensure this wine is soft enough to drink now or will reward with cellaring for a further 3 to 4 years. This wine is great with many different foods including beef, lamb or cheese or just sip away and enjoy the layers of flavor.
Specifications Alcohol: 14.5% TA: 5.9 R/Sugar: 1.7g/l.
Reviews 87 The 2007 Cabernet (64%)-Shiraz (24%)-Merlot (12%) spent 10 months in seasoned American oak. Purple-colored, it has an attractive bouquet of spice box, cassis, mulberry, and blueberry. This is followed by a full-bodied wine with notes of licorice, chocolate, and blue fruits emerging on the palate. Forward, tasty, and easy-to-understand, this balanced wine has very good concentration and length. Drink it over the next five years.
