Alkoomi "White Label" 2008 Late Harvest RieslingFrankland River, Western Australia
Background The Alkoomi vineyards and winery are located in the rapidly expanding Great Southern region northwest of Albany in Western Australia, about 80 kilometers inland from the Southern Ocean. The southern influence makes this the coolest climate region in Western Australia and one blessed with reasonable rainfall, long autumn sunshine and generally very consistent climatic conditions year by year. Alkoomi is recognized as one of Australia’s most outstanding wineries. Year after year this family owned winery produces wines of exceptional quality, elegance and class.
Winemaking Notes The soils are deep gravelly loam over clay subsoil. The combination of these soils and the cool climate lead to the production of intense, refined and elegantly structured wines. Canopy management is important to Alkoomi. They use upright trellises with vertical shoot positioning and implement a policy of minimal spraying. The soil is not tilled and the vines are all cane pruned by hand. The vines are watered only as required to prevent any severe stress - i.e. approximately twice a month during the summer months.
The winemaking approach is non interventionist - in other words, they let the fruit do the talking, using traditional winemaking techniques. Warm and dry conditions led to an early vintage. The wine was tank fermented and bottled early to retain its freshness. There is no oak maturation whatsoever and this ensures the wine is deliciously aromatic and mouthfilling.
Tasting Notes The color is pale straw with green tinges. Heady aromas of orange and citrus blossom, passionfruit and apricot. The palate is rich and powerful with tropical fruit flavors and finishes with crisp, fresh and clean acidity. Drinking well now, this wine will cellar well for up to ten years. This is a very versatile wines that you can serve as an aperitif or pair with something decedent like foie fras or perhaps exotic like mild chilli crab. For a more conventional pairing serve with a chicken or seafood salad, sushi, a cheese plate or a fruit flan.

Reviews 89 (2006 Vintage) Light gold. Zesty citrus and pit fruit aromas are complemented by kerosene and wet stones; this doesn’t smell like a sweet wine. Deeper, sweeter pit fruit nectar flavors pick up a smoky quality with air, as well as hints of floral honey and caramel. Finishes with good nervy cut and precision, echoing the pit fruit flavors.
