Alkoomi 2006 Sauvignon BlancFrankland River, Western Australia
The Frankland River region is located 80 kilometers inland from the south coast of Western Australia. The region comprises rolling hills and enjoys a cooler climate than most other parts of the country. The soils are deep gravelly loam over clay subsoil. The combination of these soils and the cool climate lead to the production of intense, refined and elegantly structured wines. Canopy management is important to Alkoomi. They use upright trellises with vertical shoot positioning and implement a policy of minimal spraying. The soil is not tilled and the vines are all cane pruned by hand. The vines are watered only as required to prevent any severe stress - i.e. approximately twice a month during the summer months.
Alkoomi has 10 hectares of Sauvignon Blanc and was one of the first vineyards in the region to plant Sauvignon Blanc. The cool climate of the Frankland River region is perfectly suited to the production of high quality Sauvignon Blanc wines. This wine was picked in pristine condition over a range of 11-13° Baumé to increase complexity. A cool spring and cool summer led to a very late vintage. The winemaking approach is non interventionist - in other words, they let the fruit do the talking, using traditional winemaking techniques. The wine was tank fermented dry and bottled early to retain freshness.
The color is pale green straw. The bouquet is rich and heady showing guava, floral, gooseberry, tropical and citrus aromas. The palate is expressive and lively with gooseberry, mineral, tropical and flint flavors with fresh acidity and a crisp dry finish. Attractive when fresh and young and with careful cellaring this wine has the ability to cellar for 2-3 years. An ideal aperitif or accompaniment to shellfish, seafood dishes and green salads.
Alcohol: 11.5% pH: 3.28 TA: 6.8 R/Sugar: 1.6g/l
89 Light straw. Mineral-accented pear and peach aromas are enlivened by citrus zest and white flowers. Refreshingly bitter lime and quince flavors gain depth with air, picking up a tangerine note. No herbal qualities that I can find. The clingy finish features impressive freshness and persistence. Steve Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar - July 2007
