Alkoomi 2007 Riesling

Frankland River, Western Australia

Background

The Frankland River region is located 80 kilometers inland from the south coast of Western Australia. The region comprises rolling hills and enjoys a cooler climate than most other parts of the country. The soils are deep gravelly loam over clay subsoil. The combination of these soils and the cool climate lead to the production of intense, refined and elegantly structured wines. The soil is not tilled and the vines are all cane pruned by hand. The vines are watered only as required to prevent any severe stress - i.e. approximately twice a month during the summer months.

Winemaking Notes

This is a dry Riesling. Great Southern Riesling stands alongside that of the Clare and Eden Valleys as Australia's best and this is an excellent example. As with all of the Alkoomi wines, produced from estate-grown fruit. Warm and dry conditions led to an early vintage. The fruit was picked in the cool of early morning. Grapes were picked in pristine condition at an ideal 13° Baume. The winemaking approach is non interventionist - in other words, they let the fruit do the talking, using traditional winemaking techniques. The wine is made entirely from free run juice and contains no pressings. The wine was tank fermented dry and bottled early to retain freshness. The wine is fermented in cold steel with aromatic yeast and bottled early for freshness.

Tasting Notes

The color is pale straw with green tinges. The bouquet is highly aromatic with fragrant lime and floral characters and hints of citrus blossom and rose petal. The palate is fresh, powerful and elegant with floral, citrus and mineral flavors nicely balanced by fine natural acidity. A delicious crisp and refreshing wine that is drinking superbly now and will cellar well for up to ten years. Excellent as an aperitif or with delicate seafood dishes.

Reviews:

91 Light yellow. Intensely mineral aromas of lemon, lime pith, green apple and wet stone; picks up floral and honeycomb scents with aeration. Light-bodied citrus and orchard fruit flavors are dry, precise and nervy, with zesty white pepper and clove notes on the back end. Finishes with excellent juicy persistence and strong echoes of citrus and minerals. Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar - July / August 2008

89 The 2007 Riesling is light straw-colored with a nose of spring flowers, mineral, apple, and white peach. This leads to a ripe wine with good depth, vibrant acidity, ample citrus and pit fruit flavors, and a long, clean finish. This quality Riesling should easily evolve for a decade but can be enjoyed near term. Wine Advocate

89 Distinctive, with a tart edge to the lime and mineral flavors, lingering on the pointed, focused finish. Drink now through 2017. Wine Spectator
