Background Bodegas Lomablanca is located in the heart of the D.O. Cariñena. It is the largest D.O. in Aragón with 17,000 hectares of vineyards and the second oldest in Spain after D.O. Rioja. Bodegas Lomablanca is part of the new generation of D.O. Cariñena wines offering exceptional quality and value. Their state of the art winery is integrated into the landscape which is built into a white hillock ("Lomablanca"). Bodegas Lomablanca is equipped with the latest modern technology and respects its environment, contributing to the development of the region.
All 95 hectares of vineyards are located around the Longares and Cariñena villages, situated about 35 kilometers south of Zaragoza. It is a dry climate with a continental influence; it has cold winters, hot summers, a low rainfall and the Cierzo (north wind) which facilitates the creation of fruit with great concentration and ripeness which in turns produces wines that are rich, ripe and full-bodied in style. All fruit is estate grown. Bodegas Lomablanca has two vineyards; the first called La Gabardosa (a wild rose in Aragón) is planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and Garnacha; the second called El Calabazar (a place with pumpkins) is planted predominantly with Tempranillo. The average elevation of the vineyards is 575 to 650 meters above sea level and the age of the vines is between 10 and 30 years. The soils in both vineyards range from brownish-grey limey soil and reddish soil settled on rocky deposits to brownish-grey soil settled on alluvial deposits. Knowing the importance of vineyard management, all vines have been planted to favor leaf and cluster sun exposure and to achieve plant ventilation. The vines are low yielding with strict control of grape maturity to ensure optimum ripeness at harvest.
