Jinks Creek 2005 SangioveseVictoria
Visitors to the region are always commenting on how lucky the locals are to live in such a picturesque and unspoilt valley with an array of produce and wine to feast on. The King Valley wine region is cool climate. The region is unique as it is able to produce excellent fruit quality consistently and the varietal profile of the vines grown in the King Valley have an Italian bias, reflecting the region’s history. For many years this area was a tobacco growing area. It still is to some extent. Many of the tobacco farmers were of Italian origin. From the 1970’s favorable government policies and subsidies to the tobacco industry were phased out. Alternative crops were needed and the area under grapes has steadily expanded
The grapes were hand picked on the April 26, 2005 at 14 Baume, cropped at three ton per acre. The grapes were crushed and fermented in one pot, plunged regularly and fermented in final stages in barrel with malo. The wine was aged for 12 months in one to three year old French barriques and was then racked into tank and bottled unfiltered.
A dark ruby red color. Captivating aromas of cherries, earth, cinnamon bark, freshly grated nutmeg and a dash of vanilla greet the nose. The bouquet is full-bodied and supple with concentrated flavors of ripe plum, blackberry, intense sour cherries, spicy gamey red currants, chocolate, rosemary, dried flowers and sweet oak, giving way to an supple earthy savoriness. A complex wine with excellent balance and depth and a rich texture that finishes with silky mouthfilling and supple tannins. It is drinking with gusto now and will cellar for a further 4 to 5 years. Think Italian food with this wine including Osso Buco or a hearty pasta dishes or red meat and roasts. Also a wonderful wine to pair with chocolate.
