Background

Bodegas Amador Garcia is a family owned winery with a long tradition in producing D.O. Ca. Rioja wines in the village of Baños de Ebro in the sub-area of Rioja Alavesa. Amador García Chávarri started selling his own wine in 1969, in his home town of Vitoria. In 1985, he decided to build the actual premises in Baños de Ebro and named the winery Bodegas Amador García. His idea was to produce better wines helped by new technologies such as stainless steel tanks to control temperature fermentation.

In 2000, the premises in Baños de Ebro were enlarged in order to allow storage of oak barrels (mainly French) and start elaboration of matured wines. The first Crianza to be released into the market was the vintage 2001. The Chávarri family jointly owns the vineyards and their vineyard manager. Today the new generation are in charge of vinification. Rosa García is the winemaker and her brothers Jorge and Iñigo are in charge of the vineyard management, winery and administrative matters. Their father Amador Garcia is still involved in the winery focusing on the elaboration of their traditional and modern Rioja wines.

Winemaking Notes

Made of Tempranillo 90% and Graciano 10%. The average age of the vines is 30 years old and they have been well managed over the years. After a careful vinification process involving precise temperature control and regular pump overs the wine was placed in French oak barrels for 12 months and then spent another 12 months in the bottle prior to release to obtain more supple tannins and the perfect balance between fruit and wood.

Tasting Notes

It has a very intense black cherry red color with a nose of dark berry fruits, liquorice and vanilla. The palate is full-bodied, rich and opulent with great purity, density, and length. Complex flavors of cherries and dark berries are interwoven with toasty vanilla and spicy oak. The fine tannins provide a velvety mouthfeel that culminates in long elegant finish.

Food Pairing

Pair with any of the following dishes; lamb meatballs with a cumin, mint, and tomato Sauce, roast leg of lamb with mint jelly or sautéed chicken breasts with fennel and rosemary.

Reviews

93 The wine shows brilliant violet tint in front of intense, inky aromas of black cherry and chocolate cake. The palate is super ripe and bucks like a bronco; the tannins are dense and form titanic structure, and the finish of coffee and spice hints at a fine cigar. Editors Choice. Wine Enthusiast

91 The 2004 Amador Garcia Reserva is 90% Tempranillo and 10% Graciano aged for 12 months in French oak. Purple-colored, it reveals an enticing perfume of cedar, tobacco, leather, spice box, black cherry, and blackberry. Medium-bodied with a firm palate presence, the wine is still a bit tightly wound but has more than ample fruit, excellent flavors, and a sense of elegance. Give it 4-6 years to round out and drink it through 2025. Wine Advocate
