Background

Shottesbrooke is a small exclusive family vineyard and winery set in the eastern pocket of the beautiful and tranquil McLaren Vale valley, just 45 minutes from Adelaide. Production is just 8,000 cases annually. Magnificent views over the gum-studded vineyards, up to the rolling Willunga Hill, can be viewed from the award winning cellar door opened in April 1995. A small creek runs through the middle of the vineyard with a rustic stone hut nestled on the bank, just the spot to enjoy a picnic and a bottle of wine while taking in the serenity that the property has to offer.

In 1981 owner and Winemaker Nick Holmes purchased 30 acres of land south of McLaren Vale in the Myponga district, and set about to establish one of the first vineyards in this cool climate region. The vineyard site at Myponga was selected primarily for its moderate climate with a cool finish in the ripening period. Varieties planted include Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec. The wines proved spectacularly successful winning medals and trophies in major national and international exhibitions. Demand quickly outstripped supply. This demand led to the purchase of an additional 40 acres in the McLaren Flat enclave, a portion of McLaren Vales.

As the name suggests much of the vineyard land consists of ancient river flats, while the higher country is generally sandy loam. The generous climate provides a warm growing season in contrast to the elevated and more moderate conditions at Myponga only 12 miles away. McLaren Flat soil types and climate are perfectly suited to the production of premium Shiraz and Merlot with the heavier soils producing magnificent fruit driven full-bodied Chardonnay's.

Nick's winemaking philosophy is to reflect the generous climate of the region, producing big, full-bodied Reds and luscious Whites. The rich flavors and texture of the variety are evident in his Reds which finish with style and elegance, whilst his Whites are noted for their varietal definition and fresh flavor. Nick's experience in viticulture and commitment to excellence in winemaking ensures Shottesbrooke a place in Australia's winemaking future.
